"Retired Execs Provide Helping Hand for New Businesses"

March 11, 2001 - Cooper's is highlighted by the US Small Business Administration's SCORE. SCORE is an acronym for the Service Corps of Retired Executives, a nationwide volunteer organization whose mission is to provide free and confidential counseling to help people achieve their business goals. Danbury's SCORE Chapter currently has 15 counselors who serve clients primarily from Ridgefield to Kent. SCORE will meet with new businesses at their Brookfield offices or with existing clients at their business site to get a better feel for the business problems.

Danbury's Cooper's, whose retail outlet is located on Route 7 two miles south of the Danbury Fair Mall, will be starting its sixth season this spring. Owner Lyn Cooper went to SCORE and asked it to review her business plan to sell top soil, mulch, crushed stone and paving blocks to homeowners and commercial landscapers. "I wanted to make sure it made sense." she said.

It certainly has, Lyn's husband, Brad, who originally kept his day job with Perkin-Elmer and helped out only on weekends, has now joined the business full-time. It has expanded its offering to include water gardening and has acquired a special vehicle with up to 200 feet of hose that can shoot mulch into areas that would otherwise be hard to reach. They call this Mulch Express. This past year they closed on a purchase of five acres on Miry Brook Rd, Danbury Airport South where it operates as a wholesale Distribution Center.
